monkeymath is eternally grateful to many of you on this forum for your kindness

Hi folks,

I just wanted to thank all of you who wrote to me during a time of horrific crisis in my immediate family just prior to the exam.

A liberal arts graduate with no financial education, I had studied extraordinarily hard for Level II as a first -time taker - at least 700-800 hours - only to be derailed two weeks prior to the exam by two separate but intertwined emergencies. I wasn’t going to take the test because I was so stressed out and many of you wrote to me with kind words and encouragement, both saying I should take the test and others saying it was perfectly fine to sit this one out. I was - and still am - extraordinarily grateful to the analystforum community for the kindness you showed me. I wouldn’t have taken this test without you.

In my previous e-mails, I had just said I had an undefined family emergency. I’m now going to share this story with all of you with the hope that, whoever didn’t pass today, will soldier on because, no matter how many times you have tried or whatever happens to you, you can master this. And you will!

Ten days or so prior to the exam, my troubled brother tried to commit suicide. Out of work, divorced and an alcoholic, he had been caring at times for our mother, who has her own issues including moderate Alzheimer’s. Sadly, my brother swallowed all of my mother’s anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medicine, washing it down with ~ 24 beers, according to doctors. His ex-wife found him 11 hours later the next morning, unresponsive, when she went to pick up their dog and she called 911.

On the day I took the exam, my brother was still in the ICU and I was in the middle of trying to coordinate our mother’s move  into a skilled nursing facility because she could not care for herself.

Sadly, my mother and brother are still in bad shape and the family crisis continues - albeit now under the watchful eyes of hospital doctors and nurses  - but this morning I got the only good news I have gotten in more than a year: I passed Level II.

So, please, however down you are feeling today about not passing, however discouraged you may be: Don’t be! Bad stuff and setbacks happen to all of us and you just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other until you realize your dreams.

I wish all of you, from the bottom of my heart, only the very best in life.

June 2016 Schweser vs Elan/Wiley - Which package to buy

Hi everybody, just passed Level 1 with Schweser and original text book.  I really thought the CFA material were harder then Schweser and don’t know if Wiley/Elan would be better to go.  The packages I am looking at are below.  Everybody talks about Elan’s videos, but to be honest I used no video for prep in Level 1…Just a lot of re-reading, flashcards, and practice questions/mocks.  I have dual degrees in Math and Finance - found accounting the hardest part of Level 1…

http://www.efficientlearning.com/wiley-cfa/products/level-2/platinum-cfa... - Elan Platinum $1245 with discount
Downside - 500 Test Question - 1500 Practice Questions
Upside - Better videos - better quality questions

http://www.schweser.com/cfa/level-2/study-packages - Would get the essential with the secret sauch total is about 800 and i can preorder
upside: More practice questions 3000 and 6 tests, can preorder and expense immediately
downside: Well not that happy with the prep materials for level 1 when I got to the last month and looked at cfa questions and compared against schweser just seemed like CFA material was harder - I do not know if this is the same for Wiley/Elan but considering switching as I know CFA Level 2 is harder…

I called Wiley/Elan and pretty disappointed because I couldn’t preorder.  I was ready to pull the trigger but I can’t even preorder…At my company it looks better to submit the exam cost and the study materials together to expense.

Any idea on which of these products would be better to go with?  And what materials you used?  Is it better to wait it out until I can pre-order the elan package and expense CFA on 1 ticket? -Or preorder Schweser and sign up for CFA.  This way I could get the books sooner from the original text.

Any insight, greatly appreciated.

Level II Fail - Finally Seeing Value of this Place

Hi Everyone:  I wish I could say I had participated in the forums before today, but unfortunately, that is not the case.  I passed Level I in Dec, but I ran out of time and energy on Level II.  After looking at these forums, I’m convinced it is essential I be on here some to effectively study for a re-take. This is the first test I have failed in my long academic and finance career. For me, my weakest area was Derivatives.  My other weak areas were a result of simply not dedicating the time.  Anyway, look forward to communicating with you all over the next year!

Please post: Pass/Fail - 40/60/80 score

Passed.

40/60/80 composite score was 70%

Everyone post your result and your 40/60/80 score.  I want to get a feel for the required passing score.  I think I was very close to the mason/dixon.

For all of those discouraged by your results, I’m 35 years old and in the finance industry.  I waited a long time between level 1 and level 2.  Failed level 2 once and overslept another time because I made the awful mistake of trying to cram the night before the test.  Promised myself that I’d walk away from the test, but as more people have the accredidation, the more common place it has become as a requirement.  I’ve got three kids and I’ve done very well for myself, but when I look for positions, lack of CFA kind of stands out like a sore thumb (I don’t have a graduate degree).  Moral of the story, if you love finance and don’t want a graduate degree, suck it up and take the tests.  It only gets harder as you get older.  I wish I spent a week as my 35 year old self when I was 25.  It would have made me appreciate how much freedom and time I had to myself.

CFA L1 versus L2 - Similarities/synergies in ethics?

I just passed L1 and will sign up for L2. I am wondering if there are any synergies from having taken L1. Especially in ethics, are the L2 questions based on the same 7 standards, code of ethics, etc or do we have a new ethics curriculum?

CFA Level 2 2016 retakers

Failed in Band 9 this year with only 2 areas >70 (Equity and PM) <=50 in three areas.

Studied for only two months and studied about 300 hours, which was not good enough. I will be starting from this weekend(due to hectic work schedule). Will refer to Schweser & Willey primarily.

Change in strategy:

Doing all CFAI BB & EOC questions for thrice

Practising variety of questions from coaching institutes Q Banks

Starting from March will be focusing on taking only mocks (approximately 15) & analyzing + Willey 11th hour guide program, heard a lot about this.

Target:

70+ in all sections, I will call that a perfect redemption.

What is yours?

Did you keep for L1 books for the L2 exam?

I reckon the L2 books is enough curriculum in itself. But did you keep the CFA, Schweser, etc L1 books just in case, anr perhaps used them to read up on something for the L2 as well?

My Takeaways From CFA level 2 2015

$

Mostly wanted to share some of the mistakes i did while preparing for CFA Level 2 2015, which I hope none of you would repeat.

Starting with general perception of CFA L2, I agree that it is one of the biggest <Feel free to insert your favourite swear word> exam i have faced till now especially when you are working fulltime. Anyways my takeaways :

1) At any cost do atleast few properly timed mock exams( I don’t care kaplan or CFA mock). I did lot of mocks but none of them were timed, so when the real thing came i was so short of time on both AM/PM that i had to completely blind guess few Q’s. It was a real struggle finishing the exam on time.

2) Can’t emphasize again the importanace of EOC’s and BB’s(yea i know some of them are more than 2 pages long) but they are worth it.

3) Focus: Maybe the most important thing out of all theses which i unfortunately lack, I agree that reading the kaplan books again and again do help in retaining things and everytime u discover something new but while reading those u must be focused on each and every line, don’t try to rush through the topic in order to keep up with your schedule/plan which I unfortunately did.

4) Do makeup a schedule/plan for the exam…..i would suggest making up few backup schedules/plans in case you r lagging behind your original schedule(which i always)

5) Kaplan vs wiley….Idk i would leave to the rest of guys….but yes i found wiley Qs to be more concept based than kaplan…but then i did noty find any vignette based Q’s in wiley

6) Q bank….did not had time to do it so cant comment on that.

7) Start as early as possible…..dont leave mocks till the end…..maybe pickup few mocks somewhere in feb/march

8) CFA online Q’s are must

9) Like me you can afford to mess up few less weightage topics but then do make sure u ace FRA/Equity(Given that they still have Max weightage)

10) For revision i think a little more than a week should be enough…..some do Q;s in the last 10 days….some revise…upto u…..i went with revision

11) Another important thing would be picking up a startegy on how to approach Q’s in level2….some read the whole essay and then start to answer…..some read Q’s then essay…some go Question by Question…..and some like me are completely clueless **** and end up mixing all those startegies(dont do that….maybe in one or two topics u could)…..I find Question by Question strategy little fast and useful in my case since i was always behind on PM/AM

so these were some of the things i did right/wrong in CFA Level 2 2015……and to all those who sadly did not make this time irrespective of the level …..just wanted to share the first post which i read on this forum a couple of years back and it says  CFA is not a race(yes it’s not a rat race, or dog race or cat race or anyother f***** race), It;s a Marathon, so hang in there.

How to ACE the Level II as a full timer on your First GO

When I started studying this exam, I was afraid I wasn’t going to do well because of all the hype. Come to find out by practice exam time I was hitting 90’s.

Just got my results and earned a pass. > 70 on all topics except for Ethics and PM which were 50 - 70. My > 70 I feel was VERY Greater than 70–which brings me to the point of ACING LEVEL II On the First Go:

Started with approximately 24 weeks until the exam on a Saturday.

Used the curriculum and schweser together. No videos No Qbank.

Studied a study session a week, if they were short I continued on to the next study session if it was the SAME topic.

I started a study session EVERY Saturday and continued it until Thursday. I studied majority of my study session on saturday and sunday ( about 5 - 7 hours a day) and ended up reviewing or finishing the readings I had left on mon/tues/wed/thurs (about 1-2 hours a day). This is for FULL TIMERS.

After EVERY reading I did both CFA EOC and Schweser EOC. After the EOC I reviewed with schweser once more before I moved on.

After EVERY TOPIC I utilized the CFA TOPIC BASED TESTS THAT NO BODY KNOWS ABOUT ON THE CFA WEBSITE WHICH ARE VERY HELPFUL. DONT BE DISCOURAGED IF YOU GET DESTROYED ON THESE BECAUSE THEY DESTROYED ME.

I LEFT ETHICS FOR MY LAST STUDY SESSIONS TO STUDY AND STARTED WITH QUANT AND FOLLOWED THE CURRICULUM GUIDANCE.

6 Weeks To Go

Saturday - Took Practice Exam 1 (reviewing answers don’t take as long as you think)

Sunday - Took Practice Exam 2

During the Week I Reviewed

Saturday - Review

Sunday - Review

During the week - Review

Saturday - Practice Exam 3

Sunday - CFA MOCK

During the Week - Review

Saturday - Practice Exam 4

Sunday/During the Week Review

Saturday - Practice Exam 5

Sunday/During the Week Review

Saturday - Practice Exam 6

Sunday/During the Week Review (I Made it a point to reread FRA, ETHICS, and Equities because these are big topics)

EXAM DAY

KILLED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope that this guide is at least clear enough to help those out there with doubts, confusion, or idea on how to study or what to expect. If you have discipline to follow this you will essentially GUARENTEE a pass. This Guide COVERED EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any one who has questions or is confused, feel free to ask.

To sign up for Level II?

I was sure I failed Level I, so when I walked out of the test I made up my mind not to sign up for Level II.  I had been told by many people that if I found Level I difficult, I should think long and hard about Level II.  I understand that Level II is a whole different animal.

For background, I did not study any econ or finance in undergraduate.  I’ve been in the industry for 6 years, in wealth management.

I was surprised to have passed Level I, and even more surprised that I scored 70%+ on all topics except for fixed income, which was 51-70%.

I’m under no delusion that I will have any easier of a time with Level II just because I scored well on Level I, but it does make me think twice about completely writing off taking Level II.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Total Fees for Level II before and after 23rd sept 2015

I just passed Level I and would like to register for CFA Level II. However, I’m thinking whether to register before 23rd Sept or after that date since things are uncertain for me in the coming 12 months. So what is the difference in fees for both slabs?

I can see on the website that the fee for early registration is $650 and fees for standard registration is $860. However, what about additional charges? I think we compulsorily have to pay $150 for some ebook? Is it waived off in early registration and chargeable in standard registration. Is the differencein fee $210 or $360 or some different amount?

Guys your opinions matters!! (CFA Level 02 )- on Retake, Re-tabulation and advices

I did level - 02 exam first in 2013 and got down with Band score of 08, I knew after the exams I will be failing because my effort wasnt enough and my strategy was to ace in heavy weights, as I expected I scored <70% for FRA, Ethics & Corporate finance and 50 - 70% in Equity & portfolio management and others were below 50%. To be honest to my self I did not know the depth of other subjects in my firts attempt.

But in my second attempt in 2015, I was more confident, I knew all the areas (though not 100% comprehensively), after the exam I straight away knew I will be scoring more than 70% for FRA, Equity, Corp Fin & Ethics and hoped other subjets will be easily between 50 - 70% because I made educated guess.

My results were surprising and hard to digest, because I failed in Ethics, which I was very confident of passing easily and in my practice session I scored more than 50% of Ethics questions right.

Result is as follow;

Failed with Band - 9, I was damn sure I probably would have got easily more than 10 - 15 questions right than in previous attempt (hence provided last year difficulty level was maintained I could have jumped band 9 & 10) and 100% confident I could have passed the Ethics.

My question here is;

Do you think if Ethics moves up to atleast 50% in Re Tabulation will I be passing? and In Re tabulation process, do they manualy check my tick with answer list?

Because I felt a trivial incident while I am marking my oval shapes, which is, I bought CFA prescribed pencils however the oval was not dark enough to my eyes, I know this would not have been the reason but I just felt.

Please let me know your thoughts on my performance and Re tabulation process. Thank you very much in advance.
